Panel Discussion: “Anticipating a World under Duress: Does Europe have a game plan?”
We live in times of existential crisis. Fragile states and ungoverned spaces are spreading. Many countries suffer from economic, political and energy fragilities and struggle with poverty, lawlessness and corruption. Terrorism and violence plague North Africa and the Middle East, and increasingly also Europe. More than 50 million people are now displaced presenting major challenges on an unprecedented scale. Identity politics fuel old and new cleavages. Climate change and resource scarcity drive conflicts across Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
The established world order is changing rapidly giving rise to uncertainty and doubt. A resurgence of nationalist politics questions the model of an open society as well as traditional multilateralism. The US will remain the dominant economic, political and military world power for the foreseeable future but in the wake of the recent election there are questions about the course of the future US foreign policy. Prime among “new” powers rising is China with a GDP expected to overtake that of both the EU and the US soon. Chinais growing fast and its economic, security and social reach is rising.
How does the European Union fit into this emerging world order? The EU remains an economic giant and global actor. But the financial and economic crisis as well as the British referendum has posed a serious challenge to European unity. Moreover, Europe is struggling with an unprecedented migration crisis and the rise of nationalism, populism and racism threatens Europe’s core values. Amidst this increasingly unstable and insecure world the EU has put forward a new global strategy, combining aspects of internal and external policies, to respond the many challenges, such as energy security, migration, climate change, or terrorism.
This panel discussion will look at the role of the European Union as a global actor providing views from Europe and Asia.
